I love having manicured nails, but I rarely paint them for a simple reason: I’m incapable of making it to the Safe Dry Zone without banging them against something. And even on the rare occasion that they make it to the other side unscathed, they still look sloppy (my fine motor skills hover around where Sloan’s are right now). When I get them done professionally and sit patiently at the little fan until long after the recommended time (just to be sure), I can still barely make it a day without doing something that completely wrecks them: rock climbing, a full sink of dishes, gardening. (And yes, I love gels, but they still only last about five days on me. I’m a nail polish’s worst nightmare.)
The other week, I revisited something that had me asking my eight-year-old self, why did we stop doing this? I’m talking about glitter polish, but not the type that’s impossible to remove and gets everywhere. Ariel Gordon’s new version is glittery nail polish for grown ups, inspired by the rainbow stones she uses in her jewelry design. The larger pieces of glitter look a little more elevated and add a fun touch to my usually neutral outfits. Best of all, it doesn’t matter that I’m terrible at painting my nails since it looks better the more random the glitter pieces are, and if a piece of glitter falls off, it barely makes a difference. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so I don’t need to be too precious with it. I also love that it’s 7-free, cruelty-free, and vegan—which is like the holy grail of ethical and safe nail polishes.
