The 14 Most-Asked Questions I Get in My DMs

They’re mostly from Etsy and eBay! I’ve always loved incorporating vintage and thrifted pieces in my house and since going to antique stores and flea markets isn’t an option right now, I’ve been relying on websites even more. I wrote an Instagram post on how I find the perfect vintage rug that hopefully you’ll find useful!

I got this question a lot more back in the beginning of quarantine, but still receive it occasionally. I wear a mask anytime I’m outside of my house (even if the virus isn’t as easily spread outdoors). I do it as a sign of respect to those around me, to the frontline workers who put their lives on the line, and to keep myself and my family as safe as possible. To me, it’s such a simple thing (I bought a pack of masks, similar to these at the start of quarantine) that makes a big difference and we should all be doing our part.

I’m obsessed with the Super Serum Skin Tint Foundation (in Shela) and love that it also has SPF 40. I also use their True Skin Serum Concealer (in Yucca SC2). Both products leave a dewy finish and make your skin look like a more natural, luminescent version of itself.

I’ve been on a bit of a chocolate chip cookie kick as of late, trying to see if there’s any possible way to improve upon the recipe I’ve sworn by for years. Learning about the little ways to impart even more depth of flavor, like browning the butter, and using a combination of light and dark chocolate (but still achieving that crispy exterior with a cakey interior), has become one of my goals of quarantine. The three I’ve been making/tinkering with are: the David Leite original, these by Sarah Kieffer, and Claire Saffitz’s

I switch up the products I use pretty regularly, but here’s what I’m using currently!

Morning: I splash water on my face and then use a serum, since I heard that’s the first thing you should have on clean skin for the best results. I’ve used the Caudalie Radiance Serum for years and it always gives me a nice, subtle glow. I follow it up with Vintner’s Daughter, one of the two major splurge-items that are part of my skincare routine. It smells incredible, transforms my skin immediately and leaves it instantly refreshed and bright. Then I use Caudalie S.O.S. Moisturizing Cream to lock in the hydration. I just recently discovered the all-in-one nourishing eye cream from Goop that they gifted me and I swear I already notice a difference in the fine lines around my eyes. I finish with Supergoop! Glow Screen (gifted), which has SPF 40 and gives your skin a little sheen before applying makeup.

Evening: I wash my face with Kate Somerville DeliKate Soothing Cleanser (gifted), which is good for “stressed skin” (…feels appropriate). As the name implies, it’s really delicate and removes my makeup without stripping my skin. On nights when my skin’s looking a little dull, I’ll exfoliate with an unscented Necessaire exfoliator (gifted). To remove any residual mascara, I use the Lancome eye makeup remover, which I’ve sworn by for years (it works in one swipe without ever irritating your eyes). I use the same Caudalie Radiance Serum as the morning and follow it up with the best moisturizer I’ve ever used: Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream (gifted). I’d heard about it for years and when they offered to send me a bottle last year, I jumped at the chance. It’s an investment and one that I’ll justify moving forward since I don’t do anything to my skin (ie Botox, fillers, laser treatments) and haven’t gotten a facial in over a year. It’s both incredibly rich and emollient while also acting almost like a luxurious oil. I finish with the same Goop eye cream and apply Revitabrow to my eyebrows. It’s a growth serum I used a year ago and saw a huge improvement to my brows, my friends literally commented on it all the time. I’d actually been warned that you had to continue using it in order to maintain the growth and after I finished my second tube I completely forgot to re-order and by the time I got around to it, I had fallen off the wagon. But I’m back on now (have been for almost a month) and look forward to hopefully seeing similar results again within the next few weeks. About two times a week, I’ll skip my nighttime routine altogether in lieu of applying Vita Liberata Gradual Tanning Lotion. It looks completely natural, never streaks and is made of high quality ingredients. The last thing I apply is Lanolips 101 Treatment, which I keep in my bedside table. I put it on my lips right before falling asleep and as someone who had perpetually chapped lips their entire life, this product has changed that entirely.

Sloan’s always been incredibly observant, empathetic, and insightful. I can’t take credit for those qualities and simply try to be there to nurture, foster, and encourage those characteristics since they’re some of the things I love most about her. As for her self-assuredness and confidence, those are things we work on daily! She’s a perfectionist (sound familiar?), so we encourage mistakes by talking and reading about them (Beautiful Oops and The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes are two of our favorites) and perhaps most importantly, demonstrating our own mess-ups and how we manage them. She feels her best after tackling things that have made her nervous—whether it’s reading a page out loud in class or learning how to ride her two-wheel bike, which boosts her confidence. We focus on the effort rather than the outcome (especially now that grades are involved in school!) and, though it will probably always be a work in progress, it’s already made a big difference in her self esteem.

Sometimes promo codes are meant to be used for a very specific amount of time following a campaign and occasionally they work for the foreseeable future. I try my best to respond to people via DM with promo codes, but it’s always a best practice to screenshot at the time if you’re interested in a product or service!

I alternate between two. When I’m feeling ambitious, I swear by Nancy Silverton’s recipe. The pizza is superb and the dough is light as air, but with a perfect amount of chew. When I don’t want to dedicate quite as much time in the kitchen, this recipe is a great alternative. It’s good when made the morning-of, but even better if left in the fridge, covered, for up to three days in advance. It’s a good starter recipe for those intimidated by dough and consistently creates great pizza.

I used to start my makeup routine by applying concealer and now do the opposite after having worked with a number of fantastic makeup artists. The way I remember it (it’s been a loooong time since someone did my makeup) is that you want to first create a base with your tinted moisturizer or, in my case, foundation so that when you apply concealer, it goes on smooth and doesn’t crease or become cakey.

I do. It’s not necessarily something I’d recommend for everyone, but I’m way too lazy, and concerned I’ll misplace things, if I take them on and off throughout the day. I switch things up regularly, particularly my earrings and necklaces, just to keep things feeling fresh, but not because I’m about to exercise, shower or sleep. (You can read more about my jewelry here and here!)

Very soon! We went back and forth as to whether to make it fine or semi-fine and decided on the latter due to price constraints, since 18k gold is very expensive. Plus I love that it will be available at a more reasonable price, which means even more people will be able to own it. I had no idea just how emotional of an experience it would be, but the first time I saw Kelly and Jess in samples, I teared up. It means a lot to bring this piece to life and share it with others.

I’m verrrry excited that I’ll be able to share our house in more detail (including where specific pieces and/or alternatives are from) very soon! It’s going to be featured in the next “House Beautiful” issue, which I’m thrilled about, because our interior designer, Katie Hodges, created such a gorgeous space!

The majority of Sloan’s clothes are from Old Navy and Target (she has this sweater in three colors, and we both love this jacket!). For special occasion pieces, there are some adorable boutiques in L.A.: Claudine, Eggy, and Poppy. For pajamas, I love Little Sleepies—they’re so so soft and have the cutest prints. And for shoes, she’s usually in Cientas, which have velcro straps so they’re easy for her to slip on and off and are washable.

Here’s a list I created of my favorite suspenseful shows and horror movies (detect a theme?), bingeable showsfeel-good movies, and movies when you just need a good cry!

It’s all included in this post!
