After I saw how helpful it was to create a routine for Sloan, G and I have been working to maintain one for ourselves. Monday through Friday, I try to adhere to doing roughly the same thing every morning, so that I’m on track for the workday. It also helps differentiate the weekdays from the weekends, since the weekends are then open to whatever sounds best after we make our coffee—be it the beach, or a day lounging in A/C! Here’s what my routine has looked like recently:
6:00 AM – 6:30 AM: The very first thing that happens is Sloan comes into our bedroom to cuddle. We joke that she must start from a full sprint from her bedroom into ours the moment she realizes we’re awake based on the speed at which she skids into our room. As soon as she hears my bracelets jingling, she’s at my side. We cuddle in bed, do our rose/bud/thorn for the day, and then G and I take turns making coffee and being on “Sloan Patrol.” So, one of us will stay in bed (and eventually make it before heading downstairs) while the other person goes down to feed the cats, help Sloan with her breakfast, and make coffee. (Let me know if you’re interested in our full coffee routine—it’s a bit too involved for this post, but I’m happy to share it in another one!)

7:15 AM: Once Sloan and the cats are fed, G and I take our coffee into the living room. We used to both be on our phones, or cleaning up the previous night’s dishes, but we’ve since made it an intentional part of our routines to take coffee into another room—which has been helpful, now that we’re in our house 99 percent of the time. We’ll talk about our day and hang out downstairs until I change to go for my morning walk.

7:45 AM: Most mornings, I don’t wake up hungry so I often skip breakfast. But on mornings I’m hungry, I’ll either have a piece of toast with peanut butter and honey or cottage cheese with blueberries. Then, I go upstairs to brush my teeth and get dressed in my walking things, and put on my face lotion (I’ve been loving this one from Caudalie) and sunscreen (I like Supergoop Glowscreen, since it has such a pretty sheen to it!) before grabbing a mask and sunglasses on my way out the door.

8:00 AM: I try to leave by 8 for my walk so I can start the work day at a reasonable hour and before it gets too hot. Since it’s my only alone time during the day, I’ll listen to a true crime podcast (on the hunt for a new one, if you have any suggestions!) or make phone calls to friends.

9:00 AM: I’m someone who has gone my entire life without stretching, and certainly feel the consequences. So, even if it’s five minutes, I’ll do some really basic stretches as soon as I walk in the door, which helps a lot. One of the other things I’ve been trying to do is go through a lot of water—especially since it’s high summer and really, really hot here. I try to finish the 24-ounce bottle of water I keep at room temp before I have my coffee, and another right after my walk (I don’t bring it with me, since it’s too awkward with my mask). I still credit this water bottle, and its straw, for the sole reason I consistently drink water.

9:05 AM I’ll take a two-minute shower most days, but I wash my hair more frequently now that I’m not heat-styling it (maybe 2 to 3 times a week). Once out of the shower, I start my skincare routine while my hair is in a towel—I apply a few sprays of this Caudalie Beauty Elixir, then will re-apply my moisturizer and sunscreen. I’ve also been loving this Abeille Royale oil from Guerlain on days when my skin can use some extra hydrations (applied before sunscreen!).
9:15 AM This morning, I put on a Rachel Pally top and pants set she sent over. These days, I’m all about loose, flowy dresses, linen sets, and anything that doesn’t feel restrictive or uncomfortable—but is still polished. Everyday, I’m in a sandal slide, usually my Beatrice Valenzuela pair!

9:30 AM Once I’m dressed, I put my makeup on while I have my daily touch base with Jess (and Mimi, of course). Most mornings, I use Kosas concealer, Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks (in ‘Amethyst‘ this morning), ILIA mascara (shoutout to Leslie) and NARS Brow Perfector in ‘Komo.’ For my lip, I applied a little bit of Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in ‘Pillow Talk.’
