
For years, all I wore were simple, neutral shoes. While I’d splurge on a fun heel, I reasoned that if I was going to invest in day-to-day shoes, they should be something that I could wear with any outfit. Then, one morning, one of the moms at Sloan’s school drop-off was in a velvet Prada slide, in a shocking shade of peacock blue with a black bow. Even though the rest of her outfit wasn’t necessarily memorable (she wore skinny jeans and a white blouse), the shoes made her look incredibly pulled-together and chic. Since then, I’ve been embracing statement flats with embellishments and fun colors, and I’m not sure why I didn’t do it sooner. In retrospect, it feels funny that I worried whether they would “go” with everything since so many of the clothes I wear are in fairly neutral colors and I’ve had so much fun seeking out different colors and fabrics to make a statement, from the ground up.
