The last time we updated Sloan’s bedroom was when we swapped out her crib to a “big girl bed.” Otherwise, it remained virtually the same as when I’d designed her nursery when I was pregnant. I was so excited to work with Katie to create a bedroom Sloan could grow into and a place she loves spending time in now too.
My mom and I joke that even we would be thrilled to have this bedroom as our own now. We wanted to give nods to her favorite color (purple!), and create plenty of space for her toys—which, I should mention, are usually everywhere. Her room has never, and will never, look this way again, but for the photo shoot, we temporarily moved her kitchenette, overflowing basket of stuffies, and oversized unicorn, which just goes to show what a flexible space Katie Hodges made.
Little did we know when Katie designed her built-in desk and cabinetry just how much time Sloan would be spending there, due to COVID and virtual school. It’s funny because we even saw a drastic change from when she was doing work at the kitchen counter, and after we set her up into this elevated space in her bedroom. She’s so much more engaged now, working from her own space. I can’t wait to see how Sloan uses it, now through her teens and beyond.

As a note: These photos were staged for ‘House Beautiful’ (on newstands now!) so a few of the items pictured here were borrowed from Katie’s personal collection (as you’ll see in the “Sources”) or moved around for photography—scroll down to see what it looks like today, as we use it in daily life.
And here’s what it looked like before! Pretty dramatic change, right?

And here’s what it looks like today, as well as a few additional, unstyled shots of the space:
