A Letter to My Daughter On Her 10th Birthday

Dear Sloan,

Happy Birthday! Something about you hitting 10 (double digits!!!) feels so legitimate. We’ve celebrated you properly throughout the month, kicking things off with your first overnight trip to Disneyland, a Valentine-themed craft party, and a fancy sushi dinner, your current fixation meal.

Every time I think about it, I’m struck by how lucky I am to live with my best friend. And I’m not trying to pull any “cool mom” moves here, but honestly, we laugh so hard that we both get the hiccups, one of the not-so-great traits I’ve passed along. And now you’re borrowing my clothes, which is both alarming and hilarious. No oversized sweatshirt is safe anymore. You’ve started stealing my sweaters, and I can’t say I mind until I discover them crumpled up on the floor of your closet. Our playlists are eerily similar. While your devotion to Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, and Beyoncé is nothing short of legendary, I’m always pleasantly surprised by your love for Dad’s ‘80s classics and my obsession with movie scores. The music from Titanic has been on repeat, and I was blown away when you heard Legends of the Fall and made the connection that both scores were written by the same composer (shout out to James Horner).

You’ve always been such a sweet, sensitive soul. That hasn’t changed. But ohhhh, you’ve definitely developed a bit of spice, at least when you’re at home. You’re feisty, strong-willed, and passionate – traits I love, even if they come with a side of attitude.

But despite all your sass, you’re still my favorite person. And I love that you never question that. You have this incredible ability to care deeply about everyone around you, and you always go out of your way to ensure no one feels left out. Even at your birthday party, you ensured your friend from another school – who didn’t know anyone else – felt included and seen. You’re the kind of person who notices when others are on the outside and reaches out without hesitation.

I’ll continue writing these letters to you on your birthday each year, but from now on, they’ll be handwritten, and I’ll save them for you. I cherish this space and community I’ve created, but I also want to honor and respect your privacy as you age. Thank you for being the best part of every day. I love you the most.

Always,
Mommy
